Go here instead: discover unique locations for the high-end retirement lifestyle.
Pinpointing the perfect locale for your forever timber frame home is a milestone decision. As such, it’s understandable why a few iconic, mainstream places dominate as popular choices. Typically located in beautiful places with lots of year-round activities, these predictable hot spots promise an idealized lifestyle. But — as any wise buyer knows, there’s certainly more than one choice out there.
Between the Atlantic seaboard and the Pacific shoreline, North America is filled with spectacular gems, and Woodhouse regional project managers (RPMs) specialize in knowing the best of what each of their regions has to offer. Consider these five places off the beaten path for your luxury timber frame forever home from Woodhouse.
Cannon Beach, Oregon
Suggested by: Ben King, Woodhouse Regional Project Manager for the Northwest
If rugged coastlines, abundant wildlife, seaside towns, and lighthouses have your heart, head west to Cannon Beach, Oregon. Once named to National Geographic’s list of one of the world’s 100 most beautiful places, Cannon Beach possesses some of the most stunning vistas of the North Pacific Ocean and is also known for its vibrant art community.
While a coastal timber frame home may be a dream-come-true, if you locate inland, you can still enjoy the public beaches through the town’s many access points. Tidepooling is a beloved pastime as is exploring the miles of scenic trails that cut through towering old growth forests. Enjoy Haystack Rock, an iconic monolith rising 235 feet just off the coast. Cannon City is conveniently located about an hour west of Portland and Oregon wine country.
Minocqua, Wisconsin
Suggested by: Jamie Thompson, Woodhouse Regional Project Manager for the Midwest
Often overlooked, Wisconsin is prime territory for excellent retirement living and one of its star jewels is Minocqua. Considered the hub of the Midwest’s Northwoods, Minocqua is filled with lakes and nature’s beauty. With one of the largest concentrations of fresh water bodies in the world, along with hundreds of miles of paved bike trails and over 600 miles of foot trails, Minocqua is a four-season playground for an active lifestyle. When you want a break, head to town and take advantage of the eateries, supper clubs, and shopping. Whether you seek a lakefront timber frame home or a charming woodland cabin, you can live the best version of your retirement life in this beautiful area.
McHenry, Maryland
Suggested by: Jonathan Shockley, Woodhouse Regional Project Manager for the Mid-Atlantic
The Mid-Atlantic has a population of more than 41 million people, but quiet, scenic places do exist. McHenry, Maryland, located on the northernmost shore and tip of one of Deep Creek Lake’s many arms, is one such hidden gem. However — secluded doesn’t mean isolated. McHenry’s airport simplifies travel.
Tucked up into the Allegheny Mountains, enjoy all the beauty of a mixed hardwood forest, gorgeous fall color, and pleasant summer temperatures from your Appalachian-style or mountain-modern timber frame home. A family-friendly ski resort and golf club are great social anchors for locals. The region also features many businesses, restaurants, and bars, which are accessible by boat for even more unique charm.
Uwharrie Mountains, North Carolina
Suggested by: Don Downs, Woodhouse Regional Project Manager for the Southeast
Can’t decide between the energy of urban culture or the soothing vibe of nature? The Uwharrie Mountains, or what North Carolina calls the forgotten mountains, provide both. Relatively undiscovered, this small mountain range is surprisingly rugged with 215 miles of trails, singletrack mountain biking, and designated wilderness. It’s an ideal spot for a timber frame mountain home or getaway home that can be transitioned to a forever home in the future. These low, wooded mountains are bordered on the west by Badin Lake, an impoundment of the Yadkin River for even more outdoor fun. Nearby, Charlotte and the “Research Triangle” of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill offer regular doses of city life.
Scarborough, Maine
Portland, Kennebunkport, Old Orchard Beach — these are all familiar names along Maine’s southern shoreline. Scarborough, however, a town located about 9 miles from Portland, has it all. Sandy white beaches, Maine’s largest continuous salt marsh, woods, and trails combine to make a premier spot for a forever home. Everything from surfing to fishing to birding to trail activities attracts outdoor enthusiasts, and Portland’s charm makes for an ideal day in the city. Coastal, modern, ranch, and many of Woodhouse’s other timber frame home styles blend beautifully into this diverse area or anywhere in Maine. Interested to learn more?
