A short week due to Thanksgiving plus the fact that all Amish weddings are in November (so, every Tuesday the guys don’t work – something to keep in mind when scheduling with an Amish crew in the Fall) but we made progress getting ready for exterior stone work and timber covered decks!

Really good progress on the interior this week. Jake, our finish carpenter started and moved all of the cabinets to their intended location and fully installed the kitchen. Work continues on the outdoor fireplace stone.

The interior trim is all installed and the chimney is complete!  Got rained out for much of the week on the exterior so no progress on the septic system but the siding progressed.

Sheetrock was installed on the main level and that always is a huge step because you can really see what the rooms are going to feel like.

Another short week due to the New Years holiday.  The guys put a coat of finish on the frame while continuing to finish drywall in the non-timber frame areas.  Israel’s guys finished the decking and Bob and Jeremy worked on the chimney.

We’re (hopefully) down to the last 6 weeks or so.  The septic system is being installed as well as fiber cement siding.  The exterior chimney is finished and the guys are moving inside.  On the inside, Jake is really moving on the trim after all of the cabinets are in.

The sand filter was completed within the septic system which leaves just the leach field before that’s done and we can get to final grading.  Israel and his crew began installing trim and battens on the exterior as well as installing the front door.  On the interior, Bob and Jeremy are still working on the stone chimney and we did a lot of pre-finishing on the pre-assembled trim which should be installed this coming week.  Five weeks to go!

Progress on the siding continues as well as the installation of the stainless steel cable railing system.  Carpeting was installed in the bedrooms as well as granite and other finishing details.  Three weeks to go!?!

Well, the first phase of construction is complete.  We received our Certificate of Occupancy!  There’s still a lot of work to be done (Lawn installation, landscaping, fencing, lower-level construction) but here’s a video that gives a good overview of where the place stands now.  This week, the boys come home from college (Connor and his friends) and we start moving in!

As a small bonus video, I hope you enjoy this description of a solar kiln we made and have been using to dry the maple and ash lumber we sawed from the logs we cut down for the driveway and will ultimately use as trim for the new home.

I hope your Thanksgiving was as fun as ours (although I still can’t believe the Lions lost).  Tracy and I decided to change the exterior of the home from natural hemlock board and batten and trim to a fiber cement board and batten and trim in a taupe color with white trim and from an asphalt shingle roof to a standing seam metal roof.  Both are more expensive but less maintenance and we think look better.  The Woodhouse design team produced a rendering showing the change.  We hope you like it.
