Planning and building a new home is one of the most exciting adventures you’ll ever undertake. If you’re ready to build that custom home – that home you’ve always dreamed of – you probably already have folders filled with ideas and plenty of questions. With a Woodhouse Timber Frame Home you can begin with one of our pre-designed plans and customize it to your taste or you can start with a blank slate and design a custom home that is totally unique.

Do I need to become an expert on design or building regulations prior to the meeting?

When you meet with your architect for the first time, you can rest easy knowing that we are experts in custom home building. This first meeting is to get to know about you, your style, and the way you live. Designing a home is just as much about creative ideas as it is about practicality. We want your new home to compliment the way you live.

Can I bring my own sketches and photographs of other homes?

The more the better! By sharing your folder or digital scrapbook of other homes, rooms and styles, as well as notes explaining why you like certain features, your architect will have a good idea of who you are and how you live.

Websites such as Pinterest is a great place to gather images and ideas. Even your own drawings or scribbles on napkins are welcome – you definitely don’t need to be an artist! This first meeting is for you and your architect to find out more about each other and begin to focus on the vision for your dream home.

Do I need to bring any documents, such as site plans or maps?

If you already own the land you’re going to build on then a site or deed map is helpful. If you are in the process of buying land then a printed map or rough drawing indicating the approximate size and location is fine. At this first meeting, your architect is most interested in your vision and ideas. Of course, any information you have as to the topography and other details is valuable. Is your land flat, sloping or undulating? Is it rocky, grassy or wooded? Does it have unique features you want to focus on, such as a stream or amazing views?

At Woodhouse, we believe in making the new home process as easy as possible. With more than 150 years of combined experience, our experts are here to ensure your new home is a dream come true.
